Brother Suleman visited the Zambian orphanage about a month ago. Here are a few pictures from his collection I'd like to share with you.

AlhumduliLlah, we are given another opportunity to help others.

This project is to collect much needed books for an orphanage in Zambia, Africa.
It's a project that's very close to my heart because it's located in an area where I grew up, because I love children, and because my uncle is the one running this orphanage. Although he's busy, and not very tech-savvy (okay, no at all), I'm determined to help as much as I can from my end (Canada).. and insha'Allah I hope you'll join me.

Details of project: Collect NEW and USED books. Islamic and secular books in all subjects. Ages 5 years old to College students.
Suggestions: Arts and Crafts, Trades, Math, Sciences, English, Arabic, Mechanics, Computers (current).

The year is almost ending, and I've done a wonderful job of not keeping my blog up to date *lowers my head in shame*.. insha'Allah I'm hoping 2012 will be much better. I have a project on the way, and new tutorials and recipes I'd like to share, as well as more swapsssss! *everyone loves those*

Fortunately my sewing streak is still going - I've even surprised myself, usually it's off to the next project after a week. Here is a skirt I made. I've actually made a few in different colours but more or less the same style.

The front says "Sisterhood" in Arabic, this is my design and hand painted on by me. The back has it written in English. Would you have put a different word?

Please give me some feedback. Positive or negative (but constructive).

Headband Tutorial

... yup... I'm failing at this blogging thing!!! sorry people... I'll try and make a better effort in keeping it updated.

Lately I've been very busy sewing.. and would like to share a really cute tutorial with you. This is a for a headband, either for children or adults (looks good on both) and really easy to make!

Note: I did have to make the headband 1 inch smaller than directed (for a 22 month old) - so the "Child Size" on the website.

Arabic Wedding Topper

I've been meaning to post this! I'm sorry it took me so long to those I promised pictures.

Anyway.. here it is! An Arabic wedding topper! I love the idea..it's definitely unique! Trust me when I say you can't find them anywhere else.. I looked!!! I made these for someone else. It took me approx. two weeks to complete, and I tried using just about every material I could get my hands on (gum paste, paper mache, plaster of paris, etc.). After the fourth try I came up with my own mix of mainly cardboard and clay.

AlhumduliLlah, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Not edible unfortunately, but solid!!

Rainbow Eid Swap

Every year we have an Eid gift swap/exchange. One intention is that sisters get to meet each other online and build a friendship that will insha'Allah last forever. It's been successful so far, alhumduliLlah.. so we're doing it again!

I'd like share a wonderful project I learned about recently. I'm not part of the organizers but have a wonderful friend right there working as a volunteer.. so I KNOW it's legit. (You never know these days)... and insha'Allah I'll be taking part in this project.

IDEA? To send at the very least 211 books to children in rural villages in Sabah, Malaysia, by October 2011.

WHY?
1) To promote reading in villages.

HOW?

I'd like to share a project.. an AWESOME project that Muslim Hands is running.

It's a ten day trek (June 13th - 23rd) to scale the peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro!!!! C'mon, how cool is that!!! Like the trek isn't brilliant enough.. the money raised (from sponsors) will go towards maternity clinics, training of midwives, essential medicines and pre and post-natal care for expectant mothers.

Not a most exciting topic.. but I'm pretty happy with how my illustration turned out!

Volcano Eruption

I have a pretty cool craft to share with you! A volcano.. that erupts!

I enjoyed this one as much as the kids did. And they REALLY loved it...from the crafting right to it erupting.

Before the craft we learned a little about volcanoes (and the one in Japan had just been on news), we also did this word search, and learned the spelling of the words.

Word Search

And now the fun begins.

You'll need an empty water bottle (500 ml) and a jumbo cereal box (or any cardboard).
Cut the box in half. Using one half as the base, tape the bottle in the center.
Cut the other half of the box in four equal parts. Tape them around the bottle as shown in the picture.
This doesn't need to be neat, nor does it need all the gaps covered - it's just the skeleton of the mountain.

Mix some water and flour - to make a gravy-like paste. Don't make it to thick.
Cut strips of news paper. Dip each strip in the paste and cover the entire mountain (not the bottle top) with ONE layer or paper.
Scrunch balls of news paper, dip in flour-water mix and stick them on. Make it random, in size and position.
Cut strips of news paper and cover entire mountain with one layer or paper - to hold all those 'rocks' in place.

After the mountain dries, (ours took 2 days) paint it. We mixed different colors together.. and got a green-brown color. If you have sand or anything that resembles sand.. sprinkle that over the wet paint. We used crumbs.. because that's just what you do when it's winter here!

Once completely dry, cut the top off. Please make sure it's an adult does this. I just used a knife. The bigger hole will make it easier for kids to pour the liquid in (to make it erupt), and it looks better.

You'll need two measuring jugs (something with a spout to make pouring easy).
In one add:
- 1/2 cup water
- 3 tsp baking soda
- few drops of dish washing liquid
- 1/2 tsp glitter (lava actually looks shiny - hence the glitter)
Mix thoroughly - or the baking soda stays at the bottom.

In the next jug add:
- 1 cup vinegar
- few drops red food coloring

This gets messy. So place a tray under your volcano to help with clean up.
First pour in the baking soda mix (mix it well before pouring in, so you get everything).
Pour in the vinegar mix. As soon as the vinegar hits the baking soda, it'll erupt.

It's such a cool topic and I could have come up with a million ideas, but this was inspired by my very wonderful friend. She hates spiders, and nearly got run over by a zebra.. but she insists spiders are much more 'evil'..haha

As for the 8 eyes.. most spiders have 6 to 8 eyes.. just learned that! :)

"I'm Melting! Melting"

Today is the perfect day to post this.. with all the rain falling (in January!!)

The idea is not mine.. I saw it a while back some where, I don't know where... so I can't link back to it. They didn't say how to make it.. but this is how I made it - so you're stuck making it my way.

Everyone loved them - even if they are a little disturbing..haha

Recipe: is the same Roll-Out Cookie Dough I used for the butterflies.

Makes 26 (3" round cookies)

1 cup butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 egg
2 tsp vanilla essence
2 3/4 cup flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt (only if you used unsalted butter)

:: Cream the butter and sugar in a mixer.
:: Add the egg and vanilla - beat for another 2 mins.
:: Add the dry ingredients together - beat until dough is formed.
:: Do not refrigerate this dough!

:: Roll out to 1/8" thickness.
:: Cut out shapes, place on ungreased cookie tray.
:: Bake at 350F until edges are golden or 400F for 10-15 mins.
:: Once completely cool, decorate as desired.

Once your cookie is baked and cooled.. either place one large marshmellow towards one end, or a cluster or mini ones. I only had the mini ones for my hot chocolate. (You're on your own if they are not halaal).

Mix together some icing sugar and water. Don't add butter.. as you want it to dry harder. Pour over the marshmellow and cookie. Don't be neat about it either!

Time to decorate. I used whatever I had around the house. The eyes, mouth and arms are done with black frosting in an icing bag. Nose is a candy (Runts) cut in half. Buttons are flat sprinkles. Scarf is Fruit Roll-Up cut to size.

Voila.. enjoy.

Contrary to what it may seem.. I'm still alive and around. I'm SO sorry for not updating my blog for a while now. Many people have asked me to continue.. and insha'Allah I hope to. And thank you to those who have continued to drop by, and left comments.. I will get to them!!

Here are a few things I hope to post about in the very near future:
- a new swap (around Jan/Feb)
- a project to help some orphan boys in Africa (I may go there in the summer, so this it the perfect opportunity to get things rolling)
- I've finally opened an Etsy store, and hope to get more things on there: Like custom (meaning my own designs) abayas, skirts, dolls, etc.
- new recipes! I already have a snowman one I'll post soon, insha'Allah
- crafts/activities for children, now that I have my nephews back to have fun with
- I have a request for Islamic book reviews, so I'll get to that too
- continue my Friday Hadith

MY Basbousa Recipe

Everyone has their own version - I should know, I've tested four so far.. but the family still likes this one which is a combination of others - so that makes it MINE *grin*

You are welcome to share your recipe.. so I can try it out!!

Makes approx. 35 pieces.

3/4 cup oil
1/2 cup sugar
4 eggs
3/4 cup milk
2 tsp vanilla essence
1 1/2 tsp orange/lemon zest

3/4 cup white flour
1 1/2 cup semolina
4 1/4 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt

Mix the wet (top 6) ingredients together. Mix the dry ingredients together. Combine both, and pour batter into a greased 9"x13" pyrex dish. Place almonds spaced so they'd be in the center of each square once cut.

Bake at 350F until golden.
Pour hot syrup on hot basbousa - allow to absorb, then cut into squares.

Syrup
1 3/4 cup sugar
3 tblsp honey
2 cups orange juice
1/2 cup water
Stir over medium heat for 15 minutes. Pour over basbousa as soon as it comes out of the oven.

Socks to Warm The Streets

I think this will probably be my last post, and last project here.

There wasn’t much help for this project, Warm The Streets…. despite that we managed to collect/receive 136 pairs of socks.

This was a very important project for me to fulfill because the recipients had asked for socks, and when someone who doesn’t have something as simple as socks and asks for it the least I can do is try and get it to them.

Thank you to those that helped out, your efforts are very much appreciated. The socks have officially been delivered. Yaay!

Care Bags Delivered

Oh I am sorry my dear readers for the very delayed post. I’m around, but have no net connection so it makes it difficult to post.

Anyhooo… the 48 gorgeous Native Care Bags have been delivered (finally!) to an organization called Native Child right here in Toronto. They were very happy to receive them. This has been a project I’ve always wanted to do (before I even started blogging) and I’m thrilled WE were able to put them together.

Thank you very, very much to all those that helped.

Each bag included: two colouring books (a small and large one), crayons, a stuffed toy, stickers, a toothbrush, soap, a face towel, a pencil, erasers, a sharpener, a ruler and note book.

Donations came from sisters here in Canada, Singapore, Medina, UK, and the States. Thank you again ladies, it wouldn’t have been possible without your help.

The Road To Mecca

Author: Muhammad Asad
Available: Thinkers Recourse
Type: Biography

What's it about? It's a travel narrative by Muhammad Asad, about his travels and experiences in the Middle East following his conversion to Islam.

Is it worth reading? I'm not sure why I like it SO much, but I do know there is nothing in it that I don't like. So check it out, it's definitely worth your time.

Is the book easy to understand? Well... yes. I think Muhammed is a brilliant writer!! I loved the style - one minute you're reading about some adventure, and the next minute it's the present journey.

Notable pages? A quote from a bedouin "If water stands motionless in a pool it grows stale and muddy, but when it moves and flows it becomes clear: so, too, man in his wanderings." (pg 48 - and throughout)

Out of 5: 5 or more :D

Butterfly Cookie Cutter

As most of my readers know, I usually share a cookie recipe a few days before Eid. And here it is!

I'm having a 'Princess Eid' this year.. and every castle needs some 'princess butterflies', I however couldn't find a cookie cutter (in my last minute baking) so I made one!

They are very easy to make (surprisingly), and sturdy enough to keep for future use (just make sure to only clean the foil part).. it's also GREAT to be able to make any shape you want.

What you'll need:
- Image/template of cookie you want to make
- Scissors
- Glue
- Sturdy cardboard
- Packaging tape (or any strong tape)
- Heavy duty Aluminum Foil (the kind for bbq's)
- A little patience

Print out the "Butterfly Template". I've put two images, one is a little simpler and is 3". This cookie is 4" - which is a pretty big cookie.

Also note: if you'd like a shape for making cookies, and can't find one online.. I'd be happy to draw it out for you - just give me a few days notice.

Stick the template on cardboard. Make sure it's thick cardboard, that wouldn't bend easily.

Cut the image out.

Cut out a 12cm piece of foil, and fold it 6 times - so you have a 2cm thick line.

Here is where a little patience is needed (depending on how complicated your cookie shape is). You need to wrap the foil around the cardboard, taping it in place as your go.

You are now ready to test out your cookie cutter.

Roll-Out Cookie Dough
This is my favourite dough for rolling-out and cutting. It's easy to make, tastes good, and soft enough to be able to use a home-made cookie cutter.

Makes 22 (4" butterfly cookies)

1 cup butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 egg
2 tsp vanilla essence
2 3/4 cup flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt (only if you used unsalted butter)

:: Cream the butter and sugar in a mixer.
:: Add the egg and vanilla - beat for another 2 mins.
:: Add the dry ingredients together - beat until dough is formed.
:: Do not refrigerate this dough!

:: Roll out to 1/8" thickness.
:: Cut out shapes, place on ungreased cookie tray.
:: Bake at 350F until edges are golden or 400F for 7 mins.
:: Once completely cool, decorate as desired. You can use a simple frosting - icing sugar and water - no butter so it dries faster, and coloured sugar.

Ramadaan Dua' Book

Ha.. I know, I know.. I'm way behind on posting a Ramadaan activity this year. Well... that's because I have no more nephews to teach, however a wonderful sister reminded me that they are still other children out there that would like to do something fun this Ramadaan. So here it is... my giant Ramadaan Dua' Book!

The purpose of this book:
- To teach children how to 'reflect' on the blessings Allah has bestowed upon us. It's something we (adults) should be doing - so encourage them from now to make it part of their lives.
- One of the best prayers a person can make is "AlhumduliLlah".
- Make Ramadaan fun, and give them a sense of how special it is.

Most of the instructions (on how to assemble this book) are on the pdf file.

Ramadaan Dua' Book PDF

After making the book, you'll need to print out 30 pages of the 'alhumduliLlah' page (last page on pdf) - and secure them in the book using the fastners you glued in.

Print out the "Reflective words" - place a word plus a small toy (balloon, date, candy, stickers, etc.) in each cylinder, cover with tissue paper and a rubber band, and stick a number on (provided on pdf).

Each day the child will poke a hole through the right day (example, 3rd fast - so number three), read the 'reflective word' - and think about what he/she is thankful for that relates with that word. Then write about it, and / or draw a picture of it.

Not much to it, but it'll definitely teach them to 'see' how much they have, and insha'Allah appreciate it.

Warm The Streets 2

Two years ago we ran a Warm The Streets project collecting winter scarves for the homeless of Toronto.

Our grateful recipients expressed a need for socks, and so insha'Allah this year we can fulfill their request.

Details of project: Send in as many socks as you can before November 1. They can be crocheted, knitted, bought. Please make sure they are adult size, in neutral colours and suitable for cold weather. You may also add a note saying who it is made by, etc.

Other ways to help:
:: Run a Sock Drive at your local masjid, school, MSA, etc.
:: Post the banner (on my side bar) on your site linked to this post.
:: Inform family, friends, co-workers, and classmates about this project.
:: Donate money for socks to be purchased. (email me)
:: Pray for those who are less-fortunate.

How they will be delivered: These will be wrapped and individually handed out to those on the streets of Toronto (Ontario, Canada), with a packed meal. I especially encourage those who live in Ontario to participate!

Mosque Money Box

Here is a craft I first did with my past Sunday School students. A lot of parents/homeschoolers seem to be interested in it.. so I thought it would be nice to share it with my bloggers (what's left of them.. haha)

Our lesson was about Mosques - keeping them clean, how they look (use calendar pics for this), the parts (dome, minaret, etc.), their purpose (community, salaat, helping others).

The idea of the money box was for the kids to collect change and give their box to the a Mosque to go towards helping others.

I prefer the kids use water paint for this craft, because kids love paint and it also allows for the design (doors, etc.) to show through.

Mosque Money Box Template

Materials:
- Mosque template printed on card stock
- wrapping paper
- soap box
- scissor/strong tape/exacto knife
- water paints/brushes/glue/glitter - decorating items
- a few coins

:: Make sure the soap box is taped shut, and cover with wrapping paper.
:: Cut out the template, and using an exacto knife cut out the thin rectangle you see just above the door.
:: Line the bottom of the soap box with the bottom of the Mosque and trace out the rectangular hole you had just cut, onto the soap box - now cut that out as well, it can be slightly bigger.
:: Allow the children to decorate their Mosque before assembling.
:: Stick the Mosque onto the box (making sure the rectangles line up).
:: Give the child a few coins to start their collection.

And here is what I got!
Well first.. let me tell you want I sent Hajar. The BFG by Roald Dahl.. yes, it's one of my favourite books, because it's the one that made me 'love' reading. If you've never read it.. you must.

Hajar was then to send me a gift that reflects the book I sent her. And here is my 'little bag of dreams'. So many lovely things, from a gorgeous bookmark, to a mirror that will show me my future husband (apparently) (hopefully it's blank *big grin*), she couldn't fit giants in.. so she opted for their pets (the cute cats you see), a batik scarf, and a handmade box, bag and key chain!

Thank you so very, very much Hajar, everything is wonderful! Now I'm going to Malaysia.. haha especially after teasing me with the Islamic Museum Guide!

It's only Sunday.. but I've already had a wonderful weekend. I spent Friday and Saturday at a cake show.. now I want to bake something amazing! But who's going to eat a three tiered cake? It was really nice to see other cool cakes (wedding, baby shower, etc.), and even see some cakes being put together.. although it disgusts me how much they blow on the cake (to keep it clean, etc.) I'm extremely picky when it comes to food and hygiene - thank God I don't need to order cakes from others.

I also bumped into an awesome store! Which is why I'm posting today.. to share their online store with you: Lush

The Gift of Rain

Another remarkable book I'd like to share with you!

Title: The Gift of Rain
Author: Tan Twan Eng
Available: Amazon
Type: Historical Fiction

What's it about? It takes place in Malaysia (during the Second World War). Philip feels as an outsider being half-British and half-Chinese until he meets Endo-san (a Japanese ambassador). Endo-san offers to be his sensei... and well, things don't turn out so clear cut..

Is it worth reading? I sure think so. Some might not feel the same, but I loved the history (some fictional), the Japanese and Chinese culture brought together, the story line, and the way it was written.

Is the book easy to understand? It's a long read, but easy to follow, and my favourite part is how Tan Twan Eng described everything.. almost poetic.

Notable pages? I can't narrow it down.. and some will just give away the story.

Native Child: Care Bags

Unfortunately, Canada has a vast number of people living in poverty. Those suffering the most, are our Aboriginal children. It is heart breaking to see anyone suffer, moreover when it's a child in our own 'backyard.'

Details of project: Help put together Care Bags for our Aboriginal children living in poverty. Our goal is to put 48 bags together.

Can you sew? Please help make totes. You may make them however you wish, I just ask you keep the handle small (for safety reasons), and make the bag big enough to fit a standard size colouring book. Pattern suggestion: Basic Tote

Umm Hibaat and Adikbongsu, here is the seascape I mentioned.

This was done for my sister. It's not my usual work, as in.. it doesn't have much detail, and I felt pretty free to just layer on the colours without much thought, and so.. it was an enjoyable piece to work on. AlhumduliLlah, my sister is happy with it.

Now to work on something else!

Masjid Ubudiah

Here it is,
.... as promised: Hajar, Adikbongsu and Asiyah.

30" x 20" Charcoal painting. Because of all the detail it took a lot of time and patience. (Don't look too close, or you'll spot all the lovely flaws..haha)

This is Masjid Ubudiah. It's located in Kuala Kangsar, Malaysia. If you see pictures, it's the beautiful Masjid with gold domes. Built in 1917 it was commissioned on the orders of the Sultan, who vowed that he would build a mosque of great beauty as thanksgiving for recovery from an illness which plagued him in those early days.

The construction of the mosque was not without difficulties (just like trying it in charcoal!). Work was interrupted several times, once when two elephants belonging to the sultan's and Raja Chulan were fighting and ran over and damaged the imported Italian marble titles. The second time when the World War 2 broke out, by the Japanese Invasion.

... all that's left is me going there! ahh.. one day, insha'Allah - and framing it.

My dearest readers, here is a recipe definitely worth making, eating.. and not sharing..ha!

I like recipes that let you use your imagination a little.. and this is one of them. From what you put in, to what you want to do with it after.. the list is exhausting.

You can eat it as a cereal, with a cereal, with ice-cream, as trail-mix, with fruit (as shown in the image.. that's apples baked with some cinnamon, brown sugar and butter), and my favourite... with fruit bottom yogurt! yummy.

Makes approx. 5 cups

4 cups oats
1/2 cup pecans - chopped
1/2 cup almonds - chopped
3/4 cup dried cranberries

1 cup dates - chopped (I add this after it's done)

3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup water
2 tsp vanilla essence
1/2 tsp salt

:: Combine all the dry ingredients in a large bowl. (Optional: You may want to add the dates in after everything is cooked, if you want them to stay chewy - as I do)
:: Microwave the last four ingredients for approximately 1min, just to dissolve the sugar.
:: Add the wet to the dry, and mix enough to combine - don't separate the chunks so much.
:: Cover a tray with parchment paper, and add the mix.
:: Bake at 275F for 45mins, or until it's golden.

There are variety of granola recipes out there, but this one is mine. You can also add, coconut, sunflower seeds, honey, different types of nuts, different kinds of dried fruit, sesame seeds, oil, cinnamon. Once cooled you can add in, different cereals, chocolate chips, etc.

Enjoy! Let me know how it goes. Another recipe good for kids to help with. Allow them to brainstorm what to add!

Foundation of Faith

Now this is a book everyone should read! Really.. I can't stress that enough.. and I don't mean you should read because it's so good, but because as a Muslim you should be well versed in its contents; it could make the difference between true belief in Allah and disbelief.

Something to think about, "Thus, it is the duty of every sincere believer in God to put aside his or her cultural experiences and emotional ties to family, tribe or nation, and acquire a working knowledge of Tawhid, the foundation of faith. For it is only in the application of that knowledge that man may achieve salvation."

Have I learned anything from it, or was it all review? Definitely! It's very well written, short but very concise.

Does the author use Qur'anic and authentic hadith texts? Yes, throughout the book. And this is one of the few books I've come across that are so well sourced. The Qur'anic text is in both Arabic and English, with where you can find each verse. Ahadith all have footnotes on who it's narrated by, and who it's collected by, as well as if it's weak, etc.

Is the book easy to understand? I was very impressed with how easy it was to understand because of the nature of the topic(s), like those directly related to Allah.

Notable pages? Abu Musa (radiAllahu anhu) said:

"One day Allah's Messenger (salAllahu alayhi wa-salaam) delivered a sermon, saying, 'O' people, fear shirk for it is more hidden than the creeping of an ant.' Those whom Allah wished asked, 'And how do we avoid it when it is more hidden than the creeping of an ant, O' Messenger of Allah?' He (salAllahu alayhi wa-salaam) replied,

'Say:'Allahumma inna na'oodhu bika an nushrika shay'an na'lamuh, wa nastaghfiruka lima la na'lamuh.' (O' Allah, we seek refuge in You from knowingly committing shirk with You, and we ask Your forgiveness for what we do not know about)." [Ahmad]

Children of Gaza

All of us are well aware of what is going on in Gaza, I shall save you the details and images. If you can help in any way, please do so.

Details of project: Send in clothing and toys for the children of Gaza. Please make sure they are NEW. You may also add a note/card/letter.

How they will be delievered: AlhumduliLlah we've finally found a way to get things into Gaza. Irfan Airway will be transporting everything for us to an area around Gaza (free) from there trucks will take it into Gaza, and there we have some brothers and sisters who will hand them out. (This is done through the organization Ummhat)

Well... I'm not dead.. although my blog speaks otherwise. Sorry to those who have dropped by and see no progress, if it makes a difference.. my non-net life (yes I have one) is busy.

Anyway, I'd like to first thank a few people, forgive me if I missed anyone:

Roving Soul, (love the name) I did read your post about 'best blogs' and have no words to explain how much it touched me. It came at a very perfect time in my life. You should be 'Roving Angel'.

Warning: Although I usually try and look past things, I'd like to discuss swaps with YOU, (feedback very welcome!). I'd like to tell you every swap has gone as smoothly as the last, and everyone happily receives their gift.. unfortunately I can't! I've been running swaps and projects way before this blog (5 + years).. and I'm still shocked every time a sister gets left out. I'm not talking about, "I sent it, but it didn't make it", "I had some problems, so I'll have to send it later" - that's all fine. Am I missing something? Am I doing something wrong? Do people really have the heart to take something without giving back? (don't answer this one). In the last month, I've already had sisters asking to join a swap - I'm a little lost if it's worth it. It's almost laughable (I'm not laughing) that the main intention for each swap is bring sisters closer, and yet we end up doing the opposite.
------ alrighty my rant is over, I'd still like to hear your thoughts.

This year I'd like to run more projects, insha'Allah. For now, I'm collecting money for milk powder to be sent to Gaza. A brother is going to purchase the milk powder in Syria and take it to Gaza, may Allah make it possible. If anyone is interested - money can be sent via paypal (amtullah79@yahoo.ca) before January 30th, 2009. I don't like projects where I have to collect funds, but this opportunity just came up. Insha'Allah this swap will be a means of not only connecting family and friends, but those dear brothers and sisters beyond our reach.

Details of swap: Send your swap partner an edible gift she can enjoy with her family. Edible = anything you can eat - sweet, salty, sour, chewy, bitter, spicy, homemade or bought, a lot or a little, rare or common, etc.

Note: all items must adhere to Islamic rules - please do not include anything that contains vanilla (any alcohol), gelatin, any meat product, etc., and keep the allergy list in mind (it will be emailed to you).

Participants allowed: International (open to Muslimahs only please). Participants will be partnered up with those closest to them so as to save on both shipping costs and time.

Many sisters have asked about the Ramadaan TIME swap, forgive me for taking so long to post images - between the flu and waiting for sisters to receive their gift, 'time' was just flying! jaja!

The Book of Negroes

AlhumduliLlah, this Eid I received something special.. a book! Books are special.. aren't they? Although I don't really like to read fictional* books, because I feel I'm wasting time if I can't get anything useful out of it.. this one is different. It's amazing yet depressing. Very depressing.. but I finished it with a heart of gratitude. Allah has made our life so easy, alhumduliLlah.

Title: The Book of Negroes (note: this books also goes under the name "Someone Knows My Name ")
Author: Lawrence Hill
Available: Amazon
Type: History (fictional)

What's it about? A little girl forced into slavery... (that's all I'm saying)

Is it worth reading? Definitely! It's so well written, you wouldn't put it down until it's done. Not everything in this book is fictional. The 'Book of Negroes' unfortunately really does exist, and so does a lot of the other information.

Is the book easy to understand? Yes, yes, very easy to understand.. the history isn't that deep that you'll get lost, but enough to understand what's going on. Whether you care to know a little about slavery or not, do yourself a favour and read it.

Notable pages? Not really, but there isn't a single page you'll get bored reading.
I was however drawn to this sentence: "I wondered for a time how a person who considered himself a good Muslim could treat other humans in such a way, but it occurred to me that the same question could be asked of Christians and Jews." [pg. 434] - maybe because it's something I wonder about as well.

Out of 5: 5 most definitely!

I'd love to hear what others think about it. And if you've read any other books written by Lawrence Hill.

Poverty - 2008

Today is ! By all of us posting something pertaining to poverty today, insha'Allah we'll be able to raise awareness, start a global discussion and add momentum to this very important cause. And if that doesn't go as hoped for, at least you made the intention and effort to try and get something good going.

There are a countless number of verses in the Qur'an and sayings of the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa-salaam) about taking care and feeding the poor - this should come as no surprise to any Believer. However, what we know and what we do are two different things...

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr (radiAllahu anhu):
A man asked the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa-salaam), "What sort of deeds or (what qualities of) Islam are good?" The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa-salaam) replied, 'To feed (the poor) and greet those whom you know and those whom you do not know.

... so are we doing what we know?

AlhumduliLlah, I've managed to work with a few organizations in Toronto to know they are unfortunately A LOT of individuals living way below the poverty line. Yes, you get poor in the West; yes, they are Muslim, Jew, Christian - and from every other religion out there; yes, they are very old and very young - and in between; ... and yes, we will one day be asked if we did anything to help.

Do you want to one of those that helped? Donate a dollar.
Would a dollar really make any difference? No.
Would it make a difference collectively? Not really, unless I have 100 readers.
Then why donate? Because it's really about the intention, making the effort.. AND making sure you are consistant in the good that you do (even if it's small). - so don't make this the last dollar you ever give, keep striving to continue this small deed, and THEN your dollar will make a difference, insha'Allah.

All funds and dua's collected will be put together to purchase food for 75 homeless people. I will personally be taking care of putting the packages together, and they will be distributed through a soup kitchen run here. May Allah count them from among the righteous. Ameen.

3 Riddles

As-salaamu'alaykum wa Rahmatu Llahi wa Barakatuh

Do good, and leave behind you a monument of virtue that the storms of time can never destroy. Write your name in kindness, love, and mercy on the hearts of thousands you come in contact with year by year, and you will never be forgotten. Your name and your good deeds will shine as the stars of heaven.

Once the Prophet of God, Muhammed (salAllahu alayhi wa-salaam) was sitting amidst his Sahaba (companions) in the mosque when all of a sudden he said "Today I shall narrate a story to you all which will reveal three riddles for all of you to solve". This hushed the crowd and they all listened to what the Prophet had to say.

Mohammed (salAllahu alayhi wa-salaam) continued by saying that once a man got to know that the days in his life was numbered and very soon he would be confronted with death. With this knowledge he feared his loneliness in the grave and went searching for true friends who would help and accompany him.

He knocked on the door of his first friend and asked whether he would help. To this the friend said, "of course, what are we here for." But then the man went on to say that he had very few days to live after which he required help. As soon as he uttered this statement, the friend said "I am sorry but when death does us apart, there is nothing we can do for you but buy you a place in the graveyard and some cloth (Kafan) to cover your dead body." Grieved but looking forward to his next friend, the man moved on.

On the second door, when he came face to face with his friend, and after narrating the entire story of his death and asked for help, the same answer was his fate again. The second friend said "I have been there with you all your life and can help you here. But there's nothing I can do for you after you die except take your corpse to the graveyard and bury you."

Lost in agony and despair, he headed for the third friend, very sure that he would receive the same answer but there was a tinge of hope left. When he confronted the third friend, and told him that he required help, the friend eagerly volunteered to help. But the man continued to say that I need help after I die. To which the third friend replied, "Do not worry, my dear friend! I shall accompany you to the grave, be there with you in the grave, even when the angels arrive for questioning (Munkar-o-Nakeer) , then assist you on the Pul-e-Sirat (bridge) and then lead you to heaven. "To this the man heaved a sigh of relief and then passed away in peace."

The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa-salaam) then turned and asked his companions if anybody could identify the three friends and the man. When the prevailing silence didn't dissolve, the Prophet continued to say, "The man in the anecdote is any other human being." The first friend is "money/wealth" , things that help us only in life and not after we die.

The second family/friend were the "children/sons and daughters", we strive for them all our life and all they give us is a shoulder to the grave.

And the third and most important friend is "Aamal (deeds)". Who accompany us all the way through.

Moral: Do not strive for materialistic values that will give you nothing and help you in no way in your eternal life. But work and pray and ask forgiveness from Allah for only the good deeds assist mankind where every other thing loses value in the life hereafter!

..'cause every little thing is gonna be alright. Rise up this mornin'... okay I'll stop.

Before I introduce this wonderful book.. take note, you do not need to be in a state of sadness to read it.. it's filled with much more, three little birds scattered about.

Personally, I'm still in awe at how Allah used this book to help me. There were times I put it down, only to find that the next time I picked it up to read, it applied to the circumstances in my life, right at that very moment, alhumduliLlah. I made better decisions because of it.. much better, ones I could have regretted. Now I know.. it may not touch others in the same way, but it does have information that we could all use (even if we claim to already know it).

AlhumduliLlah, I don't know if it is the way the book is written, my circumstances, etc. but there was a lot to think about.

Does the author use Qur'anic and authentic hadith texts? Lots, lots!.. as well as quotes from other people, poems, sayings, etc. Everything is clearly stated/sourced. I really liked how the Qur'anic verses were used. It makes you reflect upon them 'differently'. (ie: not with a different meaning - but in context, - more tafseer like.. does that make sense?)

Is the book easy to understand? Easy to understand. The author suggests not to read it all at one sitting, which I agree with. Chapters are short, but packed with valuable lessons. This makes a greatttt gift by the way!

Notable pages? With all the pages that made an impact, this one stood out the most:
"Allah's slaves are always swaying from the first state (losing all hope) to the second (having trust and hope in Allah). During the period of a single hour, one can have his share of both. So he obeys Allah and pleases Him, he remembers Him and thanks Him - and he is only able to do these through His help. Shortly afterwards, though, he disobeys Allah, goes against His commands, earns His anger, and is generally in a state of forgetfulness - all because Allah has left him to himself. Therefore Allah's slave is always oscillating between His divine care and between being forsaken.

Whenever one of Allah's slaves witnesses this phenomenon - that of changing from one state to the other - he should appreciate the dubious nature of his situation and his extreme need of being guided by Allah in every breath he breathes and in every moment he lives. His faith and belief are in Allah's hand. If Allah were to leave him alone for even the blinking of an eye, his faith would plunge to the ground. You should therefore realize that the One who is protecting your faith is the One Who is preventing the sky from falling to the earth." [pg. 233]

Just giving you a short update on how things are going with the Islam In Colombia project.

AlhumduliLlah, this Eid 7 people took the shahada! Please keep them in your prayers.. as well as those who aren't Muslim. May Allah guide us and keep us on the straight path. Ameen.

A short clip of a few of the shahadas, Allahu akhbar! These are prior to the ones on Eid.

Brother Dawd has also managed to open a small HALAL restaurant named 'Barakah'. AlhumduliLlah. What a fitting name.. not only does it benefit the growing Muslim community in having halal meals available, but it helps with employment (ie. of those Muslims without a job), generates an income to help with the Masjid, and is a means of dawa'ah. They've already had a few shahada's in the restaurant, from curious people who Allah guided to walk in.

As for the books we have sent.. alhumduliLlah, our list is growing slowly. Insha'Allah in the next few days we will send out a large shipment from IIPH.

Jazakum'Allahu khair to all the brothers and sisters who have helped financially, by sending books, Islamic products, dawa'ah material, and by spreading the word... please continue what you are doing, for Allah's pleasure.

I'm sorry.. things this year are just beyond crazy.. more mentally than physically.. so no cookie recipe, but I have a cute, fun recipe.. which the kids will love. I'll be honest.. I like it too, and enjoy an ice-cream every time! They are a big hit at bake sales.

Real?
There is a recipe around where you fill the cone with batter and bake it. I personally do not like that method.. for the following reasons: filling it with batter and making sure they stand while carrying it to the oven is an art on its own!, the chances of batter overflowing while baking is great (reviews from others)..and this makes the cone look messy, and it doesn't keep that well..in that the cone gets soggy.

Here is how I make my Ice-Cream Cupcake. I use a mini cupcake pan. One and half cupcake per ice-cream. The cupcakes are a perfect fit, and just enough cake to balance everything off. Any cupcake recipe works fine, this is an easy one - very easy.

Makes 16 ice-creams

8 tblsp butter - softened
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
3/4 cup flour
Optional: pink food colouring

:: Preheat oven to 350F (180C).
:: Put all ingredients in a bowl, using an electrical mixer, beat together until smooth.
:: Fill all 24 mini cups (no liner needed) until batter is done.
:: Bake until golden.

Butter cream frosting (approx. 2 cups)
16 flat-bottom ice-cream cones
Sprinkles
16 red candies or cherries

:: Cut a cupcake in half, place half in the bottom of the cone.
:: put a little frosting (acts as glue) on and place a whole cupcake on top.
:: Pipe a swirl of frosting on, and decorate (be creative).

Basic Tote

This is a very simple, easy to make kids tote. I'm posting it because I need it for a different project, insha'Allah.. but I hope you can benefit from it as well. They'd work great as a grocery tote too.

It's kid friendly because of the fabric, size and the handle size. The square bottom makes it roomy enough to fit toys, books, crayons, and the height and width are perfect for standard-size colouring books. They'll be packed and ready for an adventure!

Cut 2 pieces of fabric 12"w x 15"h.
Making sure the print is in the right direction - cut out a 1.5" square at the bottom of each end.

For Handles: cut 2 pieces of fabric 4"w x 13"h.
Fold each piece in half (length-wise) and iron - purple line.
Open up, fold each side to meet the purple line, and iron - green line. Close in half again and iron.

While you at the iron, press the top of each bag fabric - 1" fold inwards. You will only be stitching this down at the very end!!!!

Finish the edges of each side (4 edges for each piece) of bag fabric (with a serger or zigzag stitch).
Place right sides together, and sew along the sides, and the bottom.

Open the tote and pin or hold the bottom edges together (the squares you had cut out).
Make sure the seam of the side lines up with the seam at the bottom.
Stitch together, and finish edges (with serger or zigzag stitch).

Stitch as close as you can to each side of the handle.

Open the fold (you had ironed) at the top of the bag.
Place the handles approx. 0.5" in from top edge (read handle placement) and stitch.

Note: handle placement: Fold the whole bag in half, make a crease in the center with your finger. Open, and fold the edges to the center, make a crease with your in finger (just like how you made the handles). Place each handle edge on the inside of the edge creases.

Fold ironed crease back down, lift handle up, and pin in place.

Stitch around the edge of the top of the bag.
Optional: iron your seams all nice and flat.

Voila!.. you are done!

To Africa With Love

I have some WONDERFUL news! AlhumduliLlah. The girls orphange in Africa have received their dolls done through the Muslimah Doll Project. I don't know if I am more excited or them...hehe The blessings of Ramadaan, subhan'Allah.

Thank you to everyone at the Sunrise Academy for the 37 gorgeous dolls they sent with so much love, and to the lovely sister who helped organize everything. May Allah reward you all abundantly for your kindness, and shower you with His kindness. Ameen. You've definitely brought more than just smiles to these children.

And thank you to the sisters at the orphanage who helped with everything at that end, and sent us pictures. Jazakum'Allahu khair.

One of the dolls had a letter from the donor with. As you can see, the recipient is thrilled! Tabarak'Allah. The orphanage is going to laminate the letter and keep it at the orphanage.

There are a countless number of lectures, articles, and books alhumduliLlah on the purpose of Ramadaan, and on ways we can make the best of the blessed month.

Well this isn't going to be a lecture, or an article.. just a humble effort in trying to open a doorway to collectively do something different this year - to actually apply what those lectures/books talk about. Something I know a lot of people would like to do, but don't always have the means.

Project Description: To sponsor a child for a year, as a group.. insha'Allah. It will cost a total of $360 (Canadian). The more people who join the less money you spend, and your reward stays the same, insha'Allah.. just make sure you have the correct intention.

Seerah Of The Prophet - lesson

I'm done z lesson.. yaaaaaaay! I'm so happy. I thought I wasn't going to get it done, alhumduliLlah.

Seerah Of The Prophet

It is based on the book, "Goodnight Stories from the life of the Prophet Mohammad", published by Goodword.

The lesson plan is designed for children ages 5-6. Since they are so young all I really want them to get from this is general idea of what the Prophet's (salAllahu alayhi wa-salaam) life consisted of, and to build a love for the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa-salaam). So the entire 23 day lesson plan is a scenery! For example when a chapter talks about him traveling to Madinah, we'll be making two camels, and we'll stick that on a wall that has a path set towards 'Madinah' - well.. the cave he hid in. Simple.. fun!

This might not be effective for other children, but I know for Abdullah it is. He also understands we don't use 'images' to represent Prophets, etc. Hence the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa-salaam) is represented with 'the seal'. I however have images to represent Khadija (face removed), Buraq (horse with wings), and the Blind Man (mentioned in the Qur'an). You do not have to use these if don't feel it's right.

Ramadaan Cave

Yaaay, I'm finally done! Phew... alright, I must admit.. I rushed to get this project done so that others have enough time to copy it before Ramadaan... and well, I've taken a few short cuts.

If you are a regular reader of my blog (jazak'Allahu khair) you'll know that every Ramadaan I have a project for my nephews (now 5 and 3.5 years old) that not only teaches them a thing or two, but it's designed to make Ramadaan something to look forward to. And yes, they really do look forward to it, in addition to all the other exciting things happening in Ramadaan. (Like cranky people who need food.. I'm kidding.)

This is the 'Cave of Hira', where Prophet Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wa-salaam) received his first revelation. Insha'Allah I'd like to focus on the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa-salaam) this whole month. The cave will be filled with goodies (like stickers, balloons, candy, etc.) as well as a hadith (attached to the goodie). Each hadith is in the shape of a palm tree leaf, and once we learn the hadith, we'll stick it up in our scenery (ie: for the lesson plan).

We'll be reading "Goodnight Stories from the life of the Prophet Mohammad", published by Goodword. It has 23 short chapters, which is wonderful, because we can read one each day and do a lesson after each (skipping weekends).

I used a larger box, because I need it for two boys. Cut the front flaps off.. this will be the cave entrance.

This is not the right way of doing paper mache, but it's the method I use when in a rush..it's great! Scrunch up paper and tape it down with white masking tape (green might show through). Try and picture how you would want the cave to end up looking, and just add paper where needed. Make sure to add some in the front (where you cut the flaps, over lapping the sides, bottom, etc.

Add a little water, white (pva/craft) glue, and some brown acrylic paint together. Cut strips of paper towel, and cover the entire cave. This makes the structure stronger, you'll use less paint (next step), and gives it a better finish.

Once it's dry, using a darker acrylic brown paint (you can thin it down with a little water), cover the entire cave. Don't do a good job.. yes you read right. It will give a more realistic look. You are done at this point.

I added a little more glue to the paint and sprinkled some sand over. The palm trees can be made with whatever you have around the house. I used green fabric (with wire stuck under each leaf to angle it right) and branches I found outside. (As far as I know, there were no palm trees near the real cave.. but mine needs some life! - and now the kids know you don't only get coconuts on palm trees.) Make sure everything is dry.. add your goodies.

Your gift must reflect the theme. What is the theme you ask? Everyone will email me a theme suggestion. One shall be randomly chosen from there.

Gifts can be handmade or bought.

Ages allowed: All ages. (note: if you are not mature enough to see this swap through, please don't sign up)

Cost Limit: Non. There should be no 'expectations'. The idea is to have fun with it, and be a little creative.

Monkeying Around

As some of you know I homeschool my nephew Abdullah who is 4 years old. AlhumduliLlah, so far everything is going well, and it's amazing to see his progress, tabarak'Allah. It is unbelievable how much time and dedication it takes.. even if it's just teaching a 4 year old! I truly admire those sisters (and brothers) who homeschool their children and pray Allah makes it easy for them, rewards them for their effort, and makes their offspring of the righteous. Ameen.

... I can't begin to imagine how much it takes to teach more than one child, at different levels!

Recently I did a unit on monkeys, what fun! I've added some baking time in our week, because he really enjoys it and it's a great way to get some math in, so I'd like to share an awesome Monkey Bread recipe we made. It really is great.. even the adults enjoyed it.

Serves: 8 -10 Monkeys

2 1/4 cup (18 oz) flour
1 tsp salt
2 tsp sugar
1 tblsp instant yeast
:: Place above in a bowl, mix together.

300 ml (10 fl oz) buttermilk
2 tblsp butter - melted
1 egg - beaten
:: Mix together, add to dry mix.

:: Knead dough.
:: Place in lightly oiled bowl, cover, allow to rise.
:: Cut dough into 1" pieces.

1/2 cup pecans
1/2 cup sugar
1 tblsp cinnamon
:: Place pecans onto bottom of greased bundt pan.
:: Mix sugar and cinnamon together.
:: Roll dough pieces in sugar-mix, and place in pan.

1/2 cup butter - melted
2 tsp water
1 cup brown sugar
optional: 1 packet pudding mix - any flavour
:: Mix above together, pour over dough.

:: Bake at 350 F until golden brown.
:: Cool slightly before removing.
:: Enjoy!

Note: I made the dough ahead of time, Abdullah did the rest. Older children can make the dough themselves. I know some people just buy refrigerated biscuits (you'll need 30 ounces), I'm a 'from scratch' kind of person.. so it's up to you. As well, the dough itself makes lovely dinner rolls! (It makes approximately 25 rolls).

Additional Monkey Fun:

:: Sang to "Itsy Bitsy Spider tune" - Abdullah thinks the monkey version is great, and only sings this one now.

Down came a coconut and hit him on his knee - Oww!

:: Math: Connect The Dots (for older children: 1-60)
:: Craft: Monkey Puppet - print it out on card stock, have them paint/colour the images, and let them cut it out. When I taught kindergarten, I was surprised at how many children don't even know how to hold a scissors, let alone be able to cut something.. so provide them with the opportunity to learn, and explore. Children at age 3 can handle it, but make sure to never leave them alone with scissors.
:: Physical Activity: Monkey See Monkey Do (like Simon Says) - this is great outdoors, where you copy what the leader does.
:: Reading: Fortunately there are a lot of stories about monkeys!, like the famous Curious George, check out your local library.
:: Science: Curious George Clips - this is an excellent site!

That's a little of what we covered, use your imagination in making up other activities and have fun with it!

Got My Goat

I truly love animals.. I do, and the more I learn about them the more fascinated I am at how Allah has created such astounding creatures, subhan'Allah.

With all the incredible creatures out there, I have a great fondness for goats! Yes.. goats.. you read right. (Stop laughing.. I never ever claimed to be 'normal'). Which is why out of the many petitions I would have liked to share with you, I've chosen this one.

Please, please sign it. (yes.. this is me begging)

Got My Goat

It's about a new drug (called ATryn) that comes from the milk of genetically modified goats.

Scientists in New England have developed transgenic goats that posses a human gene. This gene makes the goats produce human proteins in their milk, and this protein forms the basis of the ATryn drug.

By putting human genes into goats, bio-engineers are turning helpless animals into mere drug factories. Fewer than 10 out of every 100 animals injected with the human gene while still in their mother's womb will be able to produce the altered milk. The other baby goats bred for drug production are killed immediately. What's more, some "successful" transgenic baby goats develop severe birth defects that scientists don't understand.

.. things like this make me sick! The whole process is cruel (which makes it unIslamic in my view) and they don't even know how safe it is for humans! Yaaay..

My Fair Adventure

Jazaki'Allahu khair Nadia for motivating me to get this blog going again. Sorry everyone for my absence.. I had been busy planning the Fair, as most of you know.

Ahh the Fair, to sum up it up... it was definitely a roller coaster ride! With every idea/plan an obstacle or two followed, but with a little patience and determination Allah opened up ways that are just unbelievable, subhan'Allah.

Right from the beginning we ran into problems finding a venue. I'm still in shock at how little help we received from almost all Islamic Institutes we approached, which says a lot about the ummah. There was a time when the Masjid was used for everything, and to help everyone. AlhumduliLlah, Allah sent us better. An organization P4E, who help new Muslims among other things, permitted us to use their premises, and helped us throughout the event. Please support them in any way you can.

Our adventure carried on right until the day of the event, where the whole morning it rained its heart out, and plans had to change.. set-up had to change! I had to fit exhibitors, a whole jumble sale, bake sale, pool table, air hockey table, a few other things and a 17 foot jumpy castle under one roof!.. let us not forget where that leaves the bbq! But Allah is the best of planners.

AlhumduliLlah, everything went great. Not as I planned it, but as He planned it. In all, we managed to make enough to purchase every Spanish Islamic book available, and extra for dawaah material, to go towards the Islam In Colombia project.

Thank you so very much to everyone who kept us in their prayers, for those that helped with the planning, to P4E, to all the wonderful volunteers (tabarak'Allah), to my dear sisters who sent in bookmarks, to those that took the time to bake some yummy goodies for our bake sale, to the great vendors, to those that came out to support us, to those that let others know about this event and project, and to my family who helped with so much.

May Allah Most High shower His blessings upon you all, reward you for your good intentions and deeds, and grant you success in this world and in the next. Ameen.

With so much to keep me on my toes, I'm very thankful for the time I had to meet so many wonderful sisters,... a fellow blogger, Maryam and one of the sisters from the OSP blog. Tabarak'Allah! Maryam.. thank you soooooo much for all your help, and being with us throughout the day (right until clean up). I also met a sweet sister from Colombia! AlhumduliLlah.

AlhumduliLlah, the rain paid us a visit only in the morning, and the rest of the day the bbq table was the place to be! Jazak'Allahu khair to the brothers that helped with that.

This is a display of the Islamic Spanish books we are to purchase, for the Muslims in Colombia. It was displayed in a way that people can actually choose the book they would like to send. It also has a little about Colombia and what brother Dawood has accomplished thus far.

The bake sale! AlhumduliLlah, we actually had a sister come back to the event just to pick up more baked goods. Thank you to all those that donated such wonderful goodies.

One of the many games we had. You get three attempts to get 'food' into the monkeys mouth, kind of like Bean Bag Toss, and of course win a prize. I'm sorry Adikbongsu, I couldn't get a picture of the golf game for you.

Sassy Apple cotton candy! (Need I say more?) Absolutely delicious! I'm a huge cotton candy fan, so this was a must-have. Insha'Allah my Eid will be like this..hehe

AlhumduliLlah, I ran the face painting table. It's my latest 'art fascination'..and I am just lovin' it! Here is a picture of a little dalmatian (tabarak'Allah) willing to pose for the camera.

Ah yes.. that is a 17 foot plus giraffe in the building! Subhan'Allah I was so happy when it fit! The children were thrilled, it kept them busy for hours.

A lovely day.. with all its ups and downs. I pray we are able to continue to help the Muslims in Colombia and others, and that Allah purifies and accepts our intentions. Ameen.

Book, Bake & Bbq Fair

Happy Pencil Crayons

As-salaamu'alaykum wa Rahmatu Llahi wa Barakatuhu

AlhumduliLlah, I actually had some time to sew this week! Here is a very simple pattern, for a pencil case. It is not my pattern, but my tutorial.. because I may need it for a future project, insha'Allah, so I made my own tutorial.

This pencil case is made with a suede fabric which goes with a messenger bag I made a while back, but I think it works much better with thicker (stiffer) fabric.

Cut a 8.5" x 11" piece of fabric. Use a regular 8.5" x 11" sheet of printing paper as your pattern. (If you decide to make a bigger pencil case, as this one isn't that big.. make the 8.5" larger).

Fold the fabric in half (8.5" to 8.5"), and cut a 1.25" x 1.25" square at the bottom of each end (the folded end).

Mark 1" at the top of each side, and cut diagonally.

Decorate as desired. I used beads. You can also stencil something on. C'mon, be creative.

Open the zipper completely (so it is easier to sew.. without it in the way)
Press (or fold) a 1/4" in place on each top.
Sew first side down.

Mark where the fabric lines up.
Pin second side down (if you need to)
Sew second side down.

Close your zipper half way (so you'll be able to turn it inside out.)
Make sure right-sides are facing each other.
Sew sides down.
Cut extra zipper sticking out and serge (or zigzag) edges.

Flatten bottom opening and sew down.
Serge (or zigzag) edges.

Turn right way out, and fill with your favourite pencil crayons.

Voila!

Very few of us will surprised to learn that as Muslims we have a responsibility to convey the message of Islam to non-Muslims and invite them to Allah. Are we really fulfilling that duty?

Maple Spice Cake

As-salaamu'alaykum wa Rahmatu Llahi wa Barakatuhu

It's definitely time for a recipe.. don't you think! Nothing like some wonderful Maple Spice Cake on a cold, gloomy day.. that was yesterday. And today it's nice and sunny (gotta love Canadian weather, alhumduliLlah).. so I enjoyed it with some Chocolate Cookie Dough ice-cream. Oh it's soooo yummy!.. and who can resist anything with maple syrup in!!

And you don't need a mixer to make it.. how nice is that.

Serves: Me alone.. or 10 people (I suppose)

1 1/2 cup flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1 pinch cayenne (yes.. you read right)
2 eggs - lightly beaten
2/3 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup pure maple syrup
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 tablespoon blackstrap molasses

Glaze:
1/2 cup icing sugar - sifted
1 tblsp maple syrup
water

:: Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).
:: Grease a 9-inch square baking pan.
:: Sift dry ingredients. Set aside.
:: In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, maple syrup, oil, and molasses until well blended... because of the molasses, this may take a little longer.
:: Add egg-mixture to dry ingredients.. I used a whisk to get it all mixed in and smooth.
:: Pour batter into the prepared pan.
:: Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean (approximately 30 minutes)
:: Cool in pan, remove and glaze.

:: For Glaze: Add maple syrup to icing sugar, and enough water to make a glaze.

Serve alone, with whipped cream, or with ice-cream.

Forgive me for the very delayed post on such an excellent book, tabarak'Allah. I actually read it twice.. and I'm sure if I read it again I'll discover new information that I some how missed. AlhumduliLlah, every single sentence has something we can think about, learn and benefit from. I'll give you some examples below.

Title: The Book of Assistance
Author: Imam 'Abdullah Ibn 'Alawi Al-Haddad
Translated by: Dr. Mostafa Badawi
Available: Fons Vitae

Have I learned anything from it, or was it all review? I learned a lot from it, alhumduliLlah. Although the topics seem basic, there is a lot we can reflect on.. and in doing so you come to realize so much more.

Does the author use Qur'anic and authentic hadith texts? Both are used, as well as quotes from different scholars. Unfortunately the hadith are not sourced!!

Is the book easy to understand? AlhumduliLlah easy to read. Chapters (topics) are very short.. like a page or two long, but very, very concise, so you can read a topic and either get a lot out of it, or a little.. it all depends on how much you ponder over what you have read.

Notable pages? I think each topic has something valuable in it, so the whole book. Again, this is one of those books you need to own.. so you can constantly refer to it. Below are sentences just randomly taken out of the book, so it gives you an idea of how concise it is, insha'Allah.

Know that repentance cannot be sound unless the sin itself is renounced, remorse is felt, and there is present a determination never to repeat it for the rest of one's life.

Everything that is forbidden to say is forbidden to listen to.

For everything depends on food which, when licit, had a great illuminating influence on the heart and gives the body energy for worship.

Disloyalty includes withholding from them any good that you are able to bring them, as well as frowning and chiding. (This is in regards to being loyal to your parents.)

Never frighten or alarm a Muslim; never mock, ridicule, or despise him, for these are part of ominous and blameworthy behaviour.

Out of 5: I rate this book 5.

It all started November 30th, our launch of Warm The Streets! In a matter of days I already had scarves flowing in... right until the very last day, alhumduliLlah. Subhan'Allah, it never ceases to amaze me how giving some people are. May The Most Merciful reward them all tremendously, and may He continue to bless them with a healthy heart. Ameen.

Ah yes.. the scarves, all the way from Texas, Toronto, Saudi Arabia, Oklahoma, and the list goes on... We had a total of 74 scarves!

Here is a beautiful account of how much love went into just one of the scarves, The Rainbow Scarf, tabarak'Allah. I tried my best to appreciate that love and care, and made sure each scarf was individually wrapped, with a poem/letter added in (if there was no letter provided from the sender to accompany it).

Which brings us to next year.. yes.. next year, insha'Allah I pray we are able to run a Warm The Streets 2 - by providing them with socks for this one (in neutral colours). I look forward to having you join us.

Save The Masjid

Do we really need a motivational post to give ten dollars? Is that sad if we do? A whole ten dollars (that's $10.00).. surely we can bring ourselves to part with that much.

Anyway..
The building where the downtown mosque, Masjid Manhattan, is located has been sold. The new owner wants the place vacated by March 31, 2008. Our brothers and sisters need our support to buy a new building.

Established more than 25 years ago, the Masjid serves approximately fifteen hundred Muslims who work in near City Hall, Wall Street and the World Trade Center.

There is no place available for lease that would accommodate the large number of worshippers in the area; therefore, buying a building is the only option. The community has raised half the necessary money for the down payment but needs help with the rest.

Time is running out for March 31st deadline.
The goal is to reach 500 thousand people in the US and Canada who can pay 10 dollars each.

1. I have to eat (dinner) after Maghrib salaat - whether it is at 4pm or 9pm..that's just the way it goes.

What is your favourite sandwich?? (no .. "what *this restaurant* serves" please, unless you tell us exactly what is in it.)

I suppose this could be a little 'boring', but there is nothing like a cheese (real cheese.. non of the processed stuff) and tomato sandwich.. yummmmmmy! You must, must sprinkle salt and pepper on the tomatoes (it's not natural to eat them any other way), and if you really want to indulge.. butter is most welcome. Oh..on anything whole wheat.

Baby Blankie

AlhumduliLlah, I managed to finish my crocheted baby blankie in pretty good time! It's a gift for someone special..a little last minute, so I really thought I wouldn't be able to get it done.

I couldn't find a simple yet pretty pattern in my limited time-frame.. so I made up my own. Here it is! Forgive me for the unprofessional instructions.. I can clear up any questions, if need be.

Finished size: approximately 30" x 30" (not including ruffle border)
Blanket: 2 skeins, sports weight, 160g (each)
Ruffle Border: 90g, sports weight
Crochet hook size: US 5mm - H8

Blanket
Chain 133
Sc in each st across (132)

Row 1: Dc in each st, turn.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), *skip 1 st, dc in next st, dc in skipped st; (repeat from *)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st, turn.
Repeat rows 1-3 for pattern, until desired size, or yarn is done. Please keep track of stitches every so often.

Ruffle Border
Put hook through one corner of blanket and pull out contrasting yarn, leave a 4" tail and sl st to secure.
Dc 10 times in same corner st.
Dc 5 times in next st. (repeat around blanket edges).
note: at each corner stitch, dc 10 times.

The Flower:
Started of using this pattern, Lazy Shell Flower.. but then I got side tracked on row 3 and did my own thing, which I probably could never repeat and can't put in words..sorry.

Loving Freezer Paper

As-salaamu'alaykum wa Rahmatu Llahi wa Barakatuhu

The amazing things you can do using freezer paper! You should be able to find Freezer Paper at any grocery store. It's like wax paper but one side is shiny (ie: waxy), and one side is matte (like parchment paper).

Why use freezer paper to stencil? It adheres to the fabric, leaving your work absolutely clean, and very professional look. It's also cheap!

Materials:
:: fabric (ie: t-shirt, bag, etc; what ever you are stenciling on)
:: freezer paper
:: exacto knife
:: the image you want to stencil (drawn or a computer print out)
:: tape
:: iron
:: paints (either of the following):
- fabric paint
- acrylic paint (with fabric medium mixed in)
- acrylic paint - will need to heat set after stenciling
:: sponges

Find the image you would like to stencil. You can either: print your image directly on to the freezer paper - on the matte side!! using your ink jet printer, or draw the image (onto the matte side), or tape a photocopied/sketched image onto the matte side of the freezer paper. (note: I first sketch my ideas out, then trace it onto the freezer paper..as shown in the image).

Cut the image out using an exacto knife (or small scissors).. I think exacto knives are one of the greatest inventions in this world.

Once your image is cut, place your freezer paper stencil on to your ironed (wrinkle free) fabric. So the shiny side should be down.. right? Make sure the iron is on dry set and iron the stencil on.

Take another piece of freezer paper (the same size as the one you just ironed on), and iron it behind the fabric; the inside of the fabric (shiny side touching the fabric). This helps keep the fabric in place and stops the paint from leaking right through. (optional: you may also place a cardboard inside the shirt to prevent the paint going through to the other side)

Using a sponge dab a thin coat of paint on. Make sure to dab, not brush. If you need another coat of paint or add another colour, let the first one dry all the way through and then dab another thin layer on, etc.

Once you are done painting, and it is completely dry, peel the stencil off. Peel the freezer paper on the inside off. Heat set your image.

Heat set: with your iron on medium tempreture (no steam), iron it inside-out for 30 seconds. Or you can put it in the dryer on low heat, inside-out for 15 minutes. Note: the stencil can not be used again... but stencilling is addictive!

On October 9, 2006 I asked how you organize your recipes, so I could do the same. I settled with writing them in separate books (ie: soups and salads in one, etc.) because I have so many recipes. Well..I have the books..and have written 5 recipes to date ... haha..(I know..that's sad)

The Unity Mural done in December 2006, is a gem in the Welfare Centre. The founder of the Centre, Major Abbas was so touched by the work gone into it, he would like to send a personal thank you to everyone who contributed. If you were one of the contributors, I need your permission to give the Centre your mailing address. (Let me know if you read this)

We managed to send out 27 dolls for The Muslimah Doll Project, posted in January 2007. Of which 11 of the dolls

reached an orphanage in Ethiopia around November, 2007. The organization (Amana Kids) would like to thank you for your kindness and support. The children were very pleased with them, alhumduliLlah. Sorry I couldn't get pictures *yet*.

The money raised (plus extra donated) from the Cupcake Bake Sale in June safely reached the school in Thailand in September 2007. The Principal, a few students and a few teachers sent letters of appreciation. They will use the money to buy books and cds for the library once it is built. You are welcome to send books as well. They are still in the process of collecting funds for the building, so if you are interested in helping out there, please let me know..I would be very happy to send you their contact information.

In August I posted a Pay It Forward game. I had to make something for three people and in return they will make something for another three people. Well I'm done! The gift to Hafsa was a bag but not handmade.. she was fine with that. The gift to Purvis should be on its way (it's a secret..so I can't tell you what it is). The gift to Nuh, a crocheted kufi and book was received few days ago. Check out their pages if you still want to play. Purvis (is short 1 person to gift), Nuh (is short all 3 people to gift) and Hafsa (is short either 1 or 2 people to gift).

Wayfarer won the pomegranate quiz posted in November, and received a strawberry cheesecake as her prize.

After 100 votes monArt won the tote contest from the Green Swap. Her prize was an online shopping spree. She purchased (and has already received) 6 skeins of yarn and some pretty stitch markers.

For those who knew I was re-doing the kitchen, and are wondering how the picture I had to paint turned out.. here it is. I wanted something simple, but which makes an impact when you enter the room. The actually painting is really huge, and all the walls are lilac, so the black canvas really works out well here, alhumduliLlah.

Am I missing anything??

Plans for 2008..lots! but for now, I'd like to open a new swap end of January..with an added twist, concentrate on the Orphanage in Africa project, complete the Warm the Streets project, maybe get an etsy shop started for donations, and then plan for February!

Feast of Sacrifice

Eid Mubarak my dear brothers and sisters!

I shall insha'Allah be celebrating Eid tomorrow, December 20th. I pray you all have a wonderful Eid filled with Allah's infinite blessings. Please take a moment to reflect on the importance of this celebration, remember those who are blessed to perform their Hajj this year and ask Allah to accept it, pray for the less fortunate, enjoy family and think of those who have to spend this special day alone,... and relax!

May Allah Most Merciful forgive our sins, guide us, and give us good in this world and the next. Ameen.

Cake Directions:

Pretty straight forward, you need a 12" cake, an 8" cake, and 2 cupcakes. Cut the 8" cake as shown in the picture.

Assemble cake as shown. First frost the head, inside of ears, and bottom half of feet with chocolate frosting. (Optional: then cover those sections with chocolate chips.) Using a piping bag and star nozzle frost the rest with vanilla frosting. Add details (ears, nose, mouth).

Voila! Halal on Eid and enjoy.

Orphanage in Africa

I'd like to share a new blog I have up, with you.

It's about an orphanage located in Africa. No amount of pictures and words can express how sad the situation is there.

Insha'Allah together we can help our sisters in Islam. It is our duty, and their right.

Our current mission is to collect enough funds to purchase a home for them, in a safer location, and a more reasonable size than the one they are currently living in.

Please, please let others know about this orphanage. All funds are taken care of by me personally, insha'Allah.

Warm The Streets

No person has to actually experience life on the streets to know the difficulties and challenges you'd have to face. Unfortunately there are so many who have no other choice but to go through these challenges. With tempretures hitting below -15°C, the streets of Toronto can be deadly.

God willing, our little contribution will make a difference for some, this winter.

note: Project due date is changed to February 4th, 2008

Details of project: Send in as many winter scarves as you can before February 4th. They can be crocheted, knitted, bought, and/or sewn (making sure they can be used in very cold tempretures). Please make sure they are adult size. You may also add a tag saying who it is made by.

Other ways to help:
:: Post the banner (on my side bar) on your site linked to this post.
:: Inform family, friends, co-workers, and classmates about this project.
:: Buy yarn for someone you know who knits/crochets and ask them to help out.
:: Pray for those who are less-fortunate.

How they are delievered: These will be wrapped and individually handed out to those on the streets of Toronto (Ontario, Canada), with a packed meal. This will be done through my dear brothers and sisters of "Feed The Streets". And 'extras' may be given to a homeless shelter for distribution. I especially encourage those who live in Toronto to participate!

The Rainstick

The Rainstick originally came from South America, but are now popular in many other parts of the world. Traditionally, it is made from the dried stem of a cactus, the spines of which are pulled out, reversed and then pushed back in. Then a few small pebbles are filled in and when they strike the spines as you tilt it, it makes the sound of rain.

Used as a musical instrument for some, and a teaching tool for me, this lovely invention makes a great craft for children. Apart from building on their creative skills, you can teach them to be aware of the different sounds around them, encourage them to ponder over nature, and Who created the rain, etc.

They are many methods to make the rainshaker, I've included two methods here.

Materials
Potato chip canister or paper towel roll
2 circles cut out of a plastic bag
2 rubber bands (or masking tape)
White glue
Straight pins (or toothpicks or wire)
1/2 cup pebbles or dried beans or uncooked rice
Decorating material

Procedure
:: Decide if you are going to use a potato chip (Pringle) canister OR a paper towel roll.
:: If using a paper towel roll, cover one end with a piece of plactic (or wax paper) and close it off with a rubber band (or masking tape).
:: Fill with approximately 1/2 cup pebbles.
:: Glue plastic lid on chip canister OR close off paper towel roll as done previously.
:: Poke pins into tube. (An adult will have to do this.)
:: *option: poke toothpicks right through to other end of paper towel roll, place a little glue around toothpick, once dry cut off the part which is sticking out.
:: *option: if using wire, push them through and bend ends down and tape over using masking tape, this makes it easy to decorate.
:: Decorate! - either paint it, colour it, or stick tissue paper (with gluestick) around it. And then you can add other decorations like yarn, beads, stickers, feathers, etc.
:: Once all dry, lift upright and hear the rain.

I'd love to see pictures of how you and your children decorate their rainstick.

Universal Children's Day

It was in 1954, when November 20th was officially declared as Universal Children's Day. A day to honour children, a day of worldwide fraternity and understanding between children, and a day of activities promoting the welfare of the world's children. Also known in Canada as National Children's Day.

In hopes of raising awareness of this important day, I'm asking all bloggers to participate by posting a child related topic on November 20th.

It can be a craft, a story, a children's book review, a recipe, a poem... whatever you wish.

Guess Who's In Season?

As-salaamu'alaykum wa Rahmatu Llahi wa Barakatuhu

Okay, I don't know if this lovely fruit is in season as-such.. but if you can find it in my grocery store, then it's in season! I thought I'll share some wonderful things about the pomegranate.
It is full of myths, health benefits, nicknames, recipes, medicinal properties, history and lots, lots more.

Anas bin Malik (radiAllahu anhu), narrated that the Prophet (salAllahu' alayhi wa-salaam), said: "There is not a pomegranate which does not have a pip from one of the pomegranates of the Garden (of Jannah) in it."

This beautiful fruit has been mentioned three times in the Qur'an. In Surah Al-Aníaam:99, Surah Al-Aníaam:14, and in Surah Ar-Rahman:68-69.

There are also several hadiths regarding its benefits, for example: Ali bin Abi Talib (radiAllahu anhu), narrated that the Prophet (salAllahu'alayhi wa-salaam), said: "Pomegranate and its rind strengthen digestion (stomach)."

Easy method to clean it: cut it in sections, place in a bowl of water and roll out the little seeds with your fingers. The pith (white part) should float to the top.. scoop out and discard. Strain seeds and use in your favourite recipe, or just enjoy as is.

Anyone who has a favourite recipe that uses pomegranates, please share.

Green Swap

So you might not save the world by using non-plastic bags, but make the intention to save the world! And you might not be the one to save a turtle from choking to death, but make the intention to!

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “The reward for deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended” (Al-Bukhari).

Details of swap: Send your swap partner a beautiful tote so she can throw away all her plastic bags! You can either make the tote, or buy one (so even those that can't sew are encouraged to join) and add some 'life' to it!

Are You Killing Them?

Did you know over 100,000 marine animals die every year from plastic entanglement! Why this doesn't bother so many people in the world (Muslims especially), I can't understand... because if it did, 500 billion to one trillion plastic bags wouldn't be used each year!! It does a lot more damage than just kill, but most of us are well aware of that. And yet.. we still use them.

Anyway today I came across an excellent site which I'd like to share with you. Morsbags.com. It's a step in making a difference, please check it out. It has lots of ways to get involved, including an easy to follow video on how to make fabric bags.. and we have lots of crafty (your favourite word Gulnarita) sisters around, masha'Allah. Maybe you can make a few for yourself, a few extra for people you know.. and even some to give those you don't know.

I've added a 'Pod' under Sketched Soul Bags, everyone is welcome and encouraged to join in. I'll keep a tally there of how many 'we' make, insha'Allah.
